Almaty 2020
Task: Design Olympic Poster for either the Winter or Summer Games

Concept
Olympic posters have a very rich design history. I wanted to acknowledge this history by designing a poster for a city I felt a personal connection to. My research led me to Almaty, Kazakhstan. Almaty was the runner-up for the 2022 Winter Olympics. As an immigrant from Kazakhstan this is exactly what I was looking for. So, I took it upon myself to create their 2020 Winter Olympics poster.
Process
As a part of the assignment I was required to find the host city logo and slice it into pieces (see slideshow). Since Almaty is surrounded by mountains, I wanted the logo to mimic a mountainside. The colors of the poster were inspired by the blue and gold of the Kazakh flag. By combining these elements, I created a symbolic and impactful visual.
Text
I focused on the visual hierarchy of design to determine the placement of the elements on the poster. The visual elements include the city, date, Olympic rings and symbol, Almaty's slogan "Keeping it Real", and "Citius, Altius, Fortius". To represent the county's history, the city venues and events are in both english and Cyrillic.
