Process for Pan's Labyrinth: A Title Sequence

Storyline
Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth tells the story of young Ofelia living in 1944 Spain. She escapes into her imagination to protect herself from her father, a sadistic army officer. In her head is where Pan's Labyrinth is born.

Theme

After watching the film, I was reminded of one of my favorite childhood books, The Spiderwick Chronicles Care and Feeding of Sprites. In the movie, Ofelia's powerful imagination summoned her help from aforementioned sprites. Since sprites are a part of my childhood imagination, I decided to focus on the theme of childhood imagination in my title sequence and enlisted the help of Spiderwick's sprites.

Storyboard

Before I started my animation process in Adobe After Effects, I used a storyboard to lay out the elements of the title sequence. First I arranged each sprites placement and movement. Then I planned the placement of the movie's title, director, and hierarchy of actors around the sprites. I narrowed down text options to Broadsheet regular. Lastly, to enhance the theme of my title sequence I added in music.
